Dayton & Knight Ltd. provided the pre-design and detailed design for Aqua Plant Construction Ltd. to assist in a design-build venture for Hitachi Corporation's Zencan ATAD facility, in Sendai, Japan.

This new facility, the first ATAD in Japan, is designed to treat 100 m3/d of 5% organic sludge feed from municipal and industrial sources from the City of Sendai.

The design included pre-stage mixing, thickening, heat exchangers, 3 ATAD reactors, Turburator aerator-mixers, PLC controls, dewatering and two bio-filter towers for odour control.

The land requirements for the facility were much less than for alternative conventional digestion processes and met the objectives of a limited site.  Preliminary results indicate a COD reduction of 95% and a volatile solids reduction of 60%.  The plant is achieving thermophilic temperatures of 60oC.
