Dayton
& Knight Ltd., working with the Greater Vancouver Water
District--the bulk water supplier to nineteen municipalities and
about 2 million people--prepared a program and Code of Practice
to maintain distribution system water quality. The Code of
Practice included recommending a unidirectional pipe flushing
program in each municipality, modifications to the operation of
the various reservoirs and a reservoir cleaning program and data
base management |
The concern with the unidirectional flushing program of over 7000 km of
pipe was the disposal of the typically high Total Suspended Solids (TSS)
water. Given the sensitivity of the streams in the Greater Vancouver area
as fish habitat, the Federal Fisheries has established maximum TSS
levels.
A pilot filtration program based on about fifty flushing sites
identified the filtration efficiency needed to meet the guidelines. The
program to develop a full scale mobile filtration unit to remove the TSS
in flushing water resulted from the program. The end result should be
enhanced distribution system water quality.
